Historic Bangalore: Tipu Sultan’s Palace & Bangalore Fort

Historic Bangalore: Tipu Sultan’s Palace & Bangalore Fort

Long before the tech parks, Bangalore was a fortified city of sultans and temples. A trail through the old city reveals its layered history — and it’s all within easy reach of South Bangalore’s homes.

Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace

This elegant two-storey teak palace in Chamarajpet was Tipu Sultan’s summer retreat. Its ornate pillars, arches and balconies are a beautiful example of Indo-Islamic architecture.

Bangalore Fort

Originally a mud fort built by Kempe Gowda and later rebuilt in stone by Hyder Ali, the surviving Delhi Gate and bastions near KR Market hint at the city’s founding.

Basavanagudi’s temples

  • Bull Temple (Dodda Basavana Gudi): a giant monolithic Nandi.
  • Bugle Rock Park and the Dodda Ganesha Temple nearby.
